Avatar Action Center > Welcome to the AAC!

Based in Second Life, the Avatar Action Center (AAC), a project of the Tides Center, is a virtual educational center dedicated to real world social change from a foundation of sustainability. Through fundraising events, educational displays, meetings with guest speakers, and reading groups, the AAC strives to raise awareness around the concept of sustainability, beyond its current narrow focus on environmental issues to its much broader systemic connections across a wider landscape of societal positive change needs. Read more about the Avatar Action Center, or if you are already a Second Life resident, visit the AAC in world.

This is the official Avatar Action Center web site, where items pertaining to the work and community of AAC are stored, organized, and shared. Here you will find descriptions of the educational work and materials AAC is using in Second Life, as well as reflections, galleries, and discussion forums that convey AAC community life and concerns.

News and Events

Celebrate Earth Day 2008 in SL!:
AAC is hosting its second Earth Day event on Saturday, April 19th from 8am to 8pm PDT. Enjoy performances, presentations, and exhibits provided by partners organizations like the Sustainable Living Roadshow. Check out the full schedule of activities and join us for a day of fun and learning!
AAC Entered Net2, Again:
But once again we did not receive enough votes to become a finalist. Also once again, out of 21 finalists, none of the virtual world projects won a spot. You can still check out our project entry though, and BIG THANKS to all of you who did support us. We'll try again next year!
Launching Soon: Avatar Action Education Network:
That's right, AAC will be producing sustainability news from within SL and covering both SL and real-life news items in a weekly show to be hosted by Sage Truss. Shows will be made available as podcasts, so keep a lookout for announcements about this fun and informational endeavor. Or better yet, visit the set located on the AAC land at Undulosa.
Announcing a New Program:
AAC will be offering visitors a Certificate of Awareness and a chance to win L$2500! What's the catch? We will be setting up Education Stations around the AAC grounds starting very soon, each of which will address a different sustainability issue. Students who complete 10 quizzes with 80% accuracy will be awarded a Certificate of Awareness and will be entered in a monthly drawing for L$2500! More details to be posted as soon as the last couple of glitches are worked out.
AAC is Raising Funds:
We have lots of fees to cover between land usage, media streaming, and web hosting, and we would love to be able to pay content creators stipends for their efforts and contributions. We have a growing network of donation kiosks in-world, and soon we will be able to take donations on the web. Visit our Avatar Action Fund site for more information.
